Students first began learning about community by starting with themselves and their families. They used a program called Inspiration to show the members of their family in a chart like the one below.

Next they used an online program at PBS Kids – Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood to design a neighborhood. Some included houses, while others included apartments. Some neighborhoods had ponds, while others had hills and trees. They were very creative.

| Then the children looked at an aerial view of Elmwood Park by going to Google Earth with their teacher. Google Earth is a program that shows satellite images of the earth. They were able to see how buildings, roads, railroads, etc., were laid out on the land. They were excited to point out the school, golf course, airport, and much more. |

| The children got a sense of what kinds of landforms, buildings, and transportation systems they would like in their communities and how they were laid out. From there they used a program called Kidpix to create individual two dimensional cities. |

Students worked with partners and used posters to learn about community members. They then presented their community member and talked about what their job was and how they were important to a community.
Using Inspiration again, the children were able to brainstorm ideas for a classroom community. They discussed what they felt was important to make a good community including a transportation system, education system, church, hospital, parks, shopping malls, sports arenas, and much more.
Each child was then given a cutout for a building to take home and design. They were assigned whatever building they thought of and some not only designed the outside of their buildings, they also drew on the walls and floors inside the buildings.
Once the buildings were completed, the children worked in small groups to put their buildings on the board. Each small group had to decide where they would put their buildings on a poster board that had streets, rivers, and railroad tracks already set up. The students added people, trees, plants, playground equipment, cars, ambulances, and much more. When each board was completed, the boards were put together to form one large classroom community. There was much discussion, some frustration, but mostly collaboration that worked!
When the communities were finally finished, parents and relatives were invited for the viewing of their children’s work. The children welcomed their visitors by presenting a summary of their work and talked about how Fr. Jeff taught them that the most important part of a community is its people.
